Summary of “2Dto3D” research project: The occurrence of polymorphism is ubiquitous to various classes of organic compounds. Examples of polymorphism are known in numerous application fields, such as food, explosives, pigments, semiconductors, fertilizers, and pharmaceutical drugs. Polymorphs exhibit sometimes very different physical properties, chemical reactivity, and biological functions. Understanding and controlling polymorphism is therefore very important. Simple questions, such as “How many polymorphs has a given compound?” or “What drives polymorph selection?” remain unanswered yet. In this scientific context, scientists have started to explore the occurrence of substrate-induced polymorphism, i.e. the formation of polymorphs that exist only near solid substrates. In particular, 2Dto3D has the ambition to elucidate how positional and orientational order of molecules propagate from the substrate to the upper crystal layers. Epitaxy and absence of epitaxy are both considered. Chiral symmetry breaking is also used as a tool. In this manner, 2Dto3D will gain a fundamental understanding of polymorphism at the interface with solid substrates. For a recent review see: “Substrate-Induced and Thin-Film Phases: Polymorphism of Organic Materials on Surfaces” A. Jones et al. Adv. Funct. Mater. 2016, 26, 2233. Candidate: A talented highly motivated young chemist or physicist with a Ph.D. in the field of crystal growth of organic molecules is actively searched. The candidate must have a sound knowledge of crystal structures, and diffraction methods. He/she must be hard at work, easy-going, rigorous, and have strong laboratory skills. He/she must be fluent in English and be able to write high-quality publications. The position is for an initial duration of one year and could be extended upon mutual agreement. To apply, candidates must send to Prof. Yves Geerts, a curriculum vitae, a letter explaining his/her motivations, a list of publications, and the name and email address of three reference persons. There is no application deadline. The position will be filled in as soon as possible. |

Purpose
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor
(HFIR), the United States’ highest flux reactor-based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world’s
most intense pulsed accelerator-based neutron source. Within this directorate, the Neutron Scattering Division (NSD)
operates the 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, studying a diverse range of materials using elastic and inelastic
neutron scattering, small angle neutron scattering (SANS), neutron reflectometry and neutron imaging techniques. Each year,
more than 1,000 experiments are carried out at HFIR and SNS in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical
sciences. Scientific research areas include quantum materials, soft matter and polymers, catalysis and interfacial chemistry,
materials and engineering, biological materials and systems and applications of computing, modeling and data analytics to
analysis of neutron scattering data. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron irradiation. To

ADD2019: da Michela Brunelli
Dear Colleague,
We are pleased to announce ADD2019, the 4th edition of the School and Conference on Analysis of Diffraction Data in real-space:
https://workshops.ill.fr/e/add2019
co-organized by the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) and the European Synchrotron (ESRF), and taking place 17 to 22 March 2019 at the European Photon and Neutron (EPN) campus in Grenoble, France.
Building on the positive experience of ADD2011 (12-14 October 2011), ADD2013 (18-22 March 2013) and ADD2016 (7-11 March 2016), the 5-day programme of ADD2019 includes 2-1/2 days for the School followed by 2-1/2 days for the Conference, basically the same format as for ADD2016.
The ADD2019 School and Conference aim to deepen the understanding and to further the training of the various communities working on real-space data analysis for neutron and x-ray diffraction techniques. Fourier transformation of diffraction data into real-space, traditionally used for the structural determination of liquids and glasses, is now increasingly employed for partially-disordered crystalline powder samples.
The scientific scope of ADD2019 pertains to both x-ray and neutron diffraction techniques, and will again include single-crystal diffuse scattering as an integral part of the School and the Conference. The School proposes pedagogic lectures on real-space data-analysis techniques followed by 7 parallel sessions of hands-on tutorials for training with various data-modelling software packages: DISCUS, PDFgui, DiffpyCMI, EPSR, Spinvert, RMCProfile, and Yell. The Conference proposes 8 invited talks and about 16 additional oral contributions, as well as a poster session.
Real-space analysis of total-scattering data or “PDF-analysis” provides a snapshot of the local structure within the sample, and is therefore sensitive to both static and dynamic atomic correlations, and hence complementary to the space-time averaged structure provided by the well-known Rietveld refinement of diffraction data. PDF-analysis now enjoys a wide field of application, in particular to nano-structured materials.
More detailed information, including on-line registration and a preliminary programme, can be found on the webpage link given above.
Note that registration will soon open, and that the deadline for abstract submission is 27 January 2019 (oral and poster contributions), and 24 February 2019 for late abstract submission (posters only).
Looking forward to seeing you in Grenoble,
The organizers:
Michela Brunelli (DUBBLE/ESRF)
